Surrealist science fiction authors get it right #375

They’re talking on Radio National about a drug that blocks fear — mooted for treating phobias, etc. Has anyone else read Jeff Noon’s Vurt? I’ll look up the name of the fear-blocking drug from that…

Update: in the book it’s called “Jam”,  short for Cortex Jammers. You can still get Vurt on Amazon.

Tell us more about this one. I can think of all sorts of negative ramifications of living life with no fear…oh yeah, that is called being 18 years old. Still I would be interested in seeing how this was taken on in the sci-fi world.

Ken, Vurt is of such a fantastically phasmogorical level of weirdness as to make a drug-induced lack of fear mere window-dressing. I do like it, though. The sort-of-sequel Pollen is also very good. Jeff Noon’s other works are mixed bag.
