In the news this week

Americans going on about their guns again. Bunch of pussies; why don’t they use baseball bats for self-defence, like the rest of us?

It is our god-given right to arm bears…err bear arms!
The longer I am away from the States the stranger it becomes to see people with guns. Going out and shooting random crap in the back woods with some friends and a few beers used to be a fun, but now I see pictures of it on Facebook and I am a bit freaked out. Maybe I am getting older and have realized that a gun is not a dangerous toy. Maybe the stories of accidental shootings and hunting accidents have become too real since I know a few people who are now worm food because of guns. Maybe being aware of the ridiculous extremes the gun enthusiast want to unleash for no other purpose than armed rebellion, makes me afraid for who will run the country after the Zombie apocalypse.

The reality of the situation is that Americans want their self defense in a nice remote control package. That way they don’t have to leave their couch or exert any energy. The drive-thru mentality of “make my life easy” and if you touch my stuff I will kill you are getting a bit out of hand.

I’ve plinked the odd tin can in my time, but never with anything lethal. The thing that bothers me about guns for “self defense” is the sheer number of people who get killed with their own gun. Common sense would suggest not carrying around anything you don’t mind being turned against you.
